What Causes A Raised Area Under The Thumb Nail?

I have a raised area under my thumb nail that is distorting the nail. It appears to be under the nail and is not discolored and I don t recall hitting my thumb. I think I would remember hitting it for the nail to be this distorted. Thanks, I ll go to my Dr. and get an answer for a copay of $10. You ve got to be kidding!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

A lump under the nail is something to be properly evaluated. It may be a tumor or a wart. The best way to know is to remove the nail and examine it with a naked eye and sometimes further examinations might be needed, like biopsy for example.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General and Family Physician
