What Causes A Red Lump With White Head On The Thigh?

My 17 year old daughter has what looks like a spider bite on her upper thigh. (I don[ t think it is an ingrown hair) It is red (not large like a bullseye) and has a white head on top. She rows on the crew team so it could have happened out at the marina. Anyway should she pop it and drain the white pus out and put antibacterial gel on it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is best that she does not pop it but let it heal spontaneously. It may be an insect bite but it is very uncommon at the inner thigh area. It may as well be folliculitis.
Whichever is the cause, she should just leave it to heal spontaneously. She may apply local warm compresses to help it heal quicker and also the local antibiotic cream.
Any increase in the size or worsening of the symptoms she needs to see a doctor.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
