What Causes A Red Raised Ring On Skin After A Dog Bite?

I got scratched by my boyfriend s dog a few days ago and shortly after it started to really hurt. I asked a friend to look at it yesterday and she said it could very well be infected because there is a red circle that has formed above the scratch and it is slightly risen. She said the circle means something but she doesn t remember what it is. Should I go to a doctor or just keep applying neosporin and cleaning it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You are urgently required to go to a doctor. Any dog bite (However small) is to be taken care of urgently. Your doctor will prescribe a course of anti-rabies vaccine. As we know that rabies is an almost fatal disease, hence no risk can be taken. In my opinion, you are already late ,therefore advised to see your doctor urgently. Also your wound seems to be infected. Hence, a course of antibiotic along with a shot of tetanus toxoid may be needed under guidance of your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
