What Causes A Screw To Loosen After A Spine Surgery Post Injury?
That is very nice of you to answer my questions. I had a motorcycle accident in 1988 and have had 10 lumbar surgeries I have had a Morphine pump since 2002 and in 1996 had a hemilaminectomy, I guess or a decompressive disc surgery at levelC3. I have had a lot of problems with my cervical spine since 1996. I just had a titanium fusion with cadaver pieces on C3, C$ &C% I went for my first post op appointment ysterday and it looks like one of the top srews is backing out and the DR. seemed to think It was of my doing. I told hime I wouldn t do anything to upset the course of getting better. I am suppossed to have a decompressive surgery which also has a cyst at level C27C3 when the fusion heals. Do you think the DR. could have made the hole for the crew to big and that is why it is backing out, not because of anything I have done?
Hole size to keep the screw is determined by stereotactic procedures and microscope size instruments, so the on table decision for the same during surgery must be precise for sure. There can be various reasons for the screw to loosen such as: - Injury - Hyperflexion or extension around the facet joint - Calcium level disturbances - Infection at the screw insertion site - Others
However, if you can send me details of your latest X-ray reports, it would be further feasible to comment ahead for the possible guidelines.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
