What Causes A Severe Cramp In The Left Upper Stomach?

I intermittently get a severe cramp in the left upper stomach that feels like a Charlie Horse and then my left upper stomach and sometimes back are really sore for days. The cramp is so strong I have to arch my back to soften the pain. What could this be?
