Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
At my 22 week apt last week they did the follow up to my anatomy scan which they had to do again since they couldn t see the heart last time. Baby is super healthy! But during my exam they realized my cervix is 1.4 cm long. I was sent home on moderate bed rest and I am going back on Thursday check again and discuss treatment My question is. This is all so weird to me! I ve had two previous pregnancies, both babies were to term well actually both were late. I ve never had spotting or even false labor during my last pregnancies. No spotting or anything this one yet either. Why is this happening? Google says things that cause short cervix are things like trauma to the cervix but I ve never had things like an abortion or any abnormal paps etc. I don t see why it s an issue now? I haven t ever had a miscarriage either. Can this suddenly happen? Maybe my cervix has always been short? And this is normal for me? Although it s really short?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Normal length of cervix is 4 to 5 cm. At 24 weeks of pregnancy it becomes a out 3.5 cm. A cervix less than 2.5 cm suggests possibility of preterm labor.
Shortening of cervix in pregnancy is due to effacement of cervix while the lower segment of uterus is formed & less cervical length suggests more effacement causing early dilatation of cervix & opening of mouth of uterus to cause premature child birth.
With increase in number of child births... cervix may become weak &open easily when there is short cervix that's why your doctors had advised for bed rest (to prevent early & preterm birth of your third child).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
