What Causes A Small Lump On The Throat & Ear Pain?

I have a small lump on the front of my throat and have to keep clearing my throat - no major cough or trouble swallowing. A little bit of ear pain as well. I am getting possibly paranoid that this is a cancerous tumor or something. Just noticed it today. If a lump hurts upon the touch, is that usually not cancer?
