What Causes A Sore Bump On The Roof Of Mouth?

my husband has a rather large swollen "bump" very sore on the inside of his mouth upper back tooth. very sore, but he says it doesn't feel mushy... as a kid i called these gum boils... and could eventually pop it...his is not soft... what to do? he is in radiation treatment for prostrate cancer, but the radiation is beamed directly at the prostrate, so i don't think that has anything to do with the tooth problem...thanks, sid

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that a sore bump over the palate or roof of mouth that is in close proximity with upper back teeth can be due to causes like:
-A dental abscess, if it is associated with a decayed tooth.
-A gum boil or a Periodontal abscess [if it involves deeper structures like bone]..
-In case if it is bony hard and feels like bone under mucosa then it can be a palatine torus..

For ruling out the exact cause a clinical examination is a must and for this you need to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and proper x rays will be taken to confirm the diagnosis..
In case of decayed tooth root canal treatment can be helpful..
If there is gum infection deep scaling and curettage followed by antibiotics and painkillers will relieve..
In case if it is a bony torus it is although harmless and can be left as it is but if it causes discomfort surgical removal can be done after assurance with his oncologist..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
