What Causes A Sudden Onset Of Lower Left Abdominal Pain?

In an 82 year old woman, what could cause sudden onset of lower left abdominal pain? There was no pain this morning; it just started in the afternoon. Woman is non-smoker, non-drug user. She does have diagnosis for Celiac Disease for last 10 years, does not eat gluten. This is not normal symptom of eating gluten by mistake. What could it be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the sudden onset of pain involving left lower abdomen may be in concern with:
- Loaded colon by constipation or inspissated stool
- Diverticulitis or diverticulosis
- Colitis
- Calculus or gravels in the urinary system
- Ovarian causes
- Others

Kindly get checked with your primary care provider, let him or her decide future course of action whether ultrasond or CT scan is relevant to be evaluated at this point of time or not.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
