What Causes A Swollen And Painful Foot Post An Injury?

I fell 2 weeks ago on my right foot and landed on the right (outside) of it. It is still very sore to the touch, but I can still walk on it. Should I wrap it or put heat on it? I started taking Advil right away and did put ice on it the first 2 days. It is slightly swollen, but not much. What else should I do to help it heal faster? I have a job that requires me to be on my feet all day also.

Hi there,

Good job on icing the injury in the first two days, because that would have helped to control the swelling at the time. It is likely that you may have strained or torn some of the ligaments around your ankle and foot, and some support would help. If you have bandages on hand, wrapping it up would help support the ankle so that the ligaments don't need to work as hard when you walk around at work. An easier option would be pull-on ankle supports, which serve the same purpose with less tricky maneuvering.

Hot packs twice a day are also a good idea at this point because they help improve the circulation around the area and speeds up healing. Some people dislike this and find that cold packs help with the pain better, just try it out and see how you feel. Raise your foot when you sleep to help reduce the swelling overnight, which will make it easier to get around in the morning. Rest whenever you can , and when you have time to sit during the day, raise your foot up as well.

You could continue with the Advil as well to help with both the pain and swelling, but be careful to do it with food to avoid any stomach irritation.

Hope this helps, and speedy recovery to you.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
