What Causes A Swollen Vein Behind The Knee With Chronic Pain?

A week ago I had pain in my right leg, specifically behind my knee. Since then it has become harder and harder for me to go about my daily activities. By the end of the day it is hard to walk because it is so painful. The pain seems to be concentrated in my knee-particularity behind it where the large vein is. It is also swollen and at night gets hot. I have a hard time sleeping at night because I can t bend that knee and at times the pain travels down that leg. I haven t had any major issues with my right leg other then my usual arthritis symptoms. I am 50 years old and active as I teach 4 year olds and have an 8 year old. What do you think is causing this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to a varicose vein behind the knee. I suggest using a compression stocking.

I also recommend exercising, losing weight, not wearing tight clothes, elevating your legs, and avoiding long periods of standing or sitting.

If the symptoms continue, sclerotherapy is an option of treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
