What Causes A Tear In The Lungs?

My 16 yr old grandaughter has been sick with a virus, not the H1N1 flu, for two weeks. In and out of ER. Docs said you just have to ride it out. She is asthmatic. 2 days ago she took a turn for the worse. Was hospitalized with pneumonia. She became worse. Was transferred to another hospital where she was diagnosed with a tear in her lung but docs felt POSITIVE she would recover. How does a tear happen and what could be the long term effects? Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Pulmonary tear is mostly caused by piercing injury, blunt injury or severe respiratory stress. Mild laceration in lung heals within 3-4 weeks, when taken proper care of. A big tear with lot of blood or fluid or gas collected in air filled cavity around lung tissue, such condition takes 7-9 weeks to heal upon taking good care of your health. Finally, a lung scar may be left here.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
