What Causes A Teenager To Mimic The Behaviour Of Others Around?

My 13 year old daughter seems to mimic poor behaviors around fellow students. Instead of sitting back and watching, she ALWAYS intertwines herself into the situation or does the exact same things she just witnessed another student doing. She is ADHD and treated with the Daytrana patch as well as clonidine. Is this impulsivity or a coping method?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Continue with the prescribed medications but you should know that ADHD children need to be given quality time by their parents. Medications do help but they should be educated & behavior therapy does work. They should be supported at school as well at home. Nutrition & food charts should be made for the best results. It is not true that ADHD children cannot pay attention, they can. They can concentrate on the things they enjoy doing, games, music, gardening, reading or dancing. But they are quick to loose focus on anything that they find boring. However, it is important to know that when these children pay attention or maintain focus they do it with much efforts so should be equally rewarded to encourage them. Love your daughter & try to study her likes & dislikes, manage accordingly. All children are unique have patience, hope I have answered your query,All the best.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
