What Causes A Throbbing & Pulsating Neck Pain?

Hello, I have neck pain located on the front right side. It comes and goes. I would describe it as throbbing or pulsating neck pain near my artery. It sometimes radiates towards the ear. When I touch the area it feels the same or sore like a bruise. I have not had any direct injuries to this area. I'm 35 and out of shape (currently), but normally do some exercise. Most of the material I find online refer to the thyroid. Any advice?
