What Causes Abdominal Bloating And Abdominal Cramps During Menstruation?

I started my period Saturday. Since Saturday I ve had stomach issues and now it s Wednesday and I m on the tale end of my period now. This involves excessive gas and stomach pains. This has happened several times now while I m on my period in my 40 s. I am burping a lot, which helps, but it comes back almost immediately. The pains are dull, almost like extreme hunger pains, but I m not hungry. More bloated with gas. I do have diarrhea. And since the holidays, I ve been drinking more than I should. These pains are in my upper abdomen not lower.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The pain upper abdomen with bloating and diarrhea seems in relation with intestine infection rather than menstruation related issue. My guidelines at present:
- Plenty of liquids intake
- Proton pump inhibitor as omeprazole on empty stomach
- Anti spasmodic medication as dicyclomine or drotaverine after meals
- Prefer easily digestible food stuffs and avoid spices, non veg if consuming

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
