What Causes Abdominal Bloating And Constipation After A Rib Fracture?
Hi, I took a fall and I am sure that I fractured the lowest rib on my left side. Since then I am getting abdominal swelling/ bloating. I have not been able to have a bowel movement, constipation or that it just hurts. No other symptoms. Not sure if I need to worry. Any ideas? I am female, 5 4 113 lbs, 46 yrs old

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Possible edema, inflammation following the stomach injury, resulting into fracture of last rib (as you think) or soft tissue injury has caused painful stomach muscles movements for pushing stools out (got hard because of lying in intestines for long time water content being absorbed). This has caused increased decomposition and gas formation from the excreta. I feel you need a detailed physical examination to judge type of injury, followed by investigation like an X-ray or USG to find the basic cause followed by specific personalised treatment. Please consult a surgeon.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
