What Causes Abdominal Bloating And Constipation While Recovering From Fractured Rib?

I was diagnosed with a fractured rib 1 week ago w/ an X-ray. Now I have bloating, constipation, not much of an appetite, nausea. I ve been taking a lot of ibuprofen & have taken a laxative the past 2 days. Is this normal while recovering from this type of fracture?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your short and specific history about X-ray proved fractured ribs, taking treatment, developed bloating, constipation, loss of appetite and nausea, taking lots of Ibuprofen, now laxative for 2 days.
The commonest causes I can think about are as follows:
Fractured ribs cause lots of pain, difficulty in breathing, aerophagia means inadvertent swallowing of air . This in turn cause bloating, constipation and so on.
Medicines also can cause GI disturbance.
Less water/fluid consumption, low diet and roughage cause constipation.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get the painful area strapped to reduce the pain further so that your requirement of Ibuprofen will get reduced.
Reduce activities to give relaxation to the chest.
Take laxatives as per your requirement as the doses need adjustment in all people.
Get X-ray if chest and abdomen to review to see whether there is fecolith impaction or any other reasons for pain and bloating and get treated accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
