What Causes Abdominal Bloating And Excessive Weight Gain?

Hi: I am 66 years old, and retired for 6 months. Since then, I have developed a pot belly and gained 20 lbs. I feel bloated all the time and have frequent acid indigestion. I desperately want to lose the belly, since I never had one before. Any advice?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The bloating and acid are likely related to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
A change of diet and the use of medications may help with this condition.

Diet for GERD includes: (1)avoiding spicy/acidic/fried foods,
(2)small frequent meals instead of large meals,
(3)reducing tomatoes, mint, caffeine, chocolate

Bloating can also be due to foods such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, beans.

In terms of the weight gain, a change of diet and increased physical activity may help with this. Because you may not be as active as you would have been when working, you would have to set aside a time to exercise.

Decrease the use of any fruit drinks or sodas and you may have to change the composition of your meals. The main diets used for weight loss are the low fat/low calorie diet and the low carb diet, you can choose the one that best suits you.

I hope this helps
