What Causes Abdominal Cramps And Diarrhea While On Metformin?

I recently was diagnosed with diabetes and was started on metformin for about 3 months now. For the past week I have been experiencing severe abdominal cramps sometimes accompanied with diarrhea. I went to the emergency room and all test that were done were negative. I was talking to a friend who mentioned it may be the metformin . I am unsure as what to do.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello I have read through your question and agree that in some people Metformin can cause side effects like abdominal cramps. For that you can be switched over to a sulfonylurea like giimipride but it has to be taken just before meals as it can cause hypoglycemia. To decide the dose you have to consult your physician as it is a prescription drug. Hope this answers your question. If you have any other questions please feel free to write.
