What Causes Abdominal Cramps And Diarrhea?

i have frequent abdominal cramps, plus thin watery stool. symptoms for the last 4 days. 5 or 6 days ago, I had 2 bran muffins. Could there be a cause and effect and, if so, how long should the symptoms last before I become concerned about something more serious.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It sounds like you have acute gastroenteritis, which could possibly be from something you ate, like you mentioned, or could come from a virus; most of the time it is impossible to know for sure.

If you are having any fevers or blood in your stool, I would recommend you see your doctor and possibly be started on antibiotics. Otherwise, I would expect your symptoms to be improving within a week. If you are still having the same cramping and watery stools after 3 more days, I would suggest seeing your doctor and possibly getting stool studies done to look for the cause.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
