Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Abdominal Pain And Dark Bowel Movements?
Went to ER for stomach and abdominal pain. Gave me famatodine through IV. Urine was normal at the ER. Checked blood, had a little bacteria but nothing serious. Doctor prescribed famatodine for at home 2 times a day, haven t taken it yet. I will tonight. Still feel stomach discomfort but not as much as before. Just went to the bathroom. Stool is still dark. I m not sure what to do. Will it begin to change once I start taking the famatodine aka Pepcid pills? (It might be worthy to point out that I took some pepto bismol two times last Night. So I m not sure if that is still in my body or not)
I had gone through your question I can understand your concern about your stomach and black stools.
As per your history you had pepto bismol this drug consists an active ingredient called bismuth. If you take this drug it reacts with the Sulphur present in the saliva. Because of that the stools turn black. But it is a transient condition and the stools must not be black for more than two days.
You must continue the medication though any of the proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole would have been ideal choice.
If you feel dizzy, have Terry black stools in blood and vomit blood with your food. You must visit a doctor for further evaluation otherwise it seems to because it pepto bismol.
Hope my answer will help you and write us back in case you want any further assistance.
Regards Dr Muzaffer Hussain Parray.
