Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, My 24 year-old nephew was in the ER for extreme stomach pain yesterday. This was the cause (as explained to me by his dad who was telling me what the surgeon told him): He had a hole in the fatty area around his stomach and liver. The small intestine was poking through the hole and causing him pain. They were able to pull the intestine back out and sew up the hole. I know that my nephew has in the past (and probably does this presently but I m not sure), consume a lot of protein powder to work out and build up his muscles. I saw so many containers of protein powder at his house once I wondered how on earth he could consume it all. Is it possible that consuming large quantities could cause the problem with his stomach/intestines? Have you heard of his issue before (the doctors had not seen this before)? Any idea what caused this? By the way, he is in the hospital now and will be for a few days, and will have to take it very easy for 6 weeks. Thank you in advance for your input!
Your symptoms are nonspecific but suggestive of benign digestion disorder called IBS or irritable bowel syndrome. This is manifested with bloating or diarrhea with pain and abdominal discomfort. As remedies you should: Look at your diet. If it contains a large amount of carbohydrates that are difficult to digest, try to replace them. Carbohydrates that are easier to digest, such as potatoes, rice, and bananas, are good substitutes. Also try to eat around five to six small meals a day instead of three larger ones to help your digestive process. Chew properly to avoid doing anything that may increase the amount of air that you swallow. This includes making sure that you are chewing your food properly, and avoiding chewing gum or smoking. Also, drink some peppermint tea, chamomile tea and ginger. In severe cases colonoscopy should be done and some medications recommended.
