What Causes Abdominal Pain And Vomiting?

Took my husband to an Urgent Care facility today for abdominal pain. The attending physician is thinking it is possibly something he ate or a virus. He has since vomitted. How do we differentiate between it being a virus or possibly something more severe as appendicitis. His pain threshhold was a 8 to 9 out of 10 with no fever at the time. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry for the health problems your husband is going through.

Abdominal pain he is having without fever at the time is suggestive of possible acute viral infection (gastroenteritis).
If the physician has visited him, and no appendicitis was doubted, this means that after physical examination, no sign of appendicitis was noted.
Furthermore, if they have done any blood test or urine analysis, and if it was normal, then, not thinking about appendicitis.

If the symptoms won't improve within a few days, and keep repeating, then, Ct-scan of the abdomen is recommended to rule out appendicitis.
For the moment, I advise to:
- encourage your husband to drink plenty of fluids especially plain water
- take OTC probiotics orally
- If diarrhea, BRAT (banana, rice, apple sauce and toast) diet is highly recommended.

Wish fast recovery.
