Hi,

Dementia is a general term that refers to a decline in cognitive function that interferes with daily activities and affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior. There are different types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and Lewy body dementia, among others.

In the case of your grandmother, her history of stroke and current symptoms of abnormal behavior and insomnia may suggest the possibility of dementia. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and diagnosis.

The behavioral symptoms, such as screaming and shouting, may be due to a condition known as "behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia" (BPSD), which can include aggression, agitation, and anxiety. Treatment for BPSD may include medication, behavioral therapy, and environmental modifications.

Insomnia can also be a common symptom of dementia, and it may be related to disruptions in the sleep-wake cycle or other factors such as pain, discomfort, or medication side effects.

It is important to speak with a healthcare professional who can evaluate your grandmother's symptoms and provide appropriate treatment and management. They may also be able to provide support and resources for you and your family as you navigate this difficult time.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
