Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Abnormal Menstrual Discharge With Pain In Pelvic Area?
Female, 16 years old, thought she might have had a UTI yesterday. However, today she has a very heavy period with clots and pelvic pain. She had issues previously so she was placed on birth control and has not very light or non-existent periods since then. Should she be taken to an ER or wait until morning?
I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.
Having very heavy period with clots and pelvic pain after being on birth control pills is commonly happening. Furthermore, the clots and abdominal pain are suggestive for possible uro-genital infection.
I advise to: - encourage her to drink plenty of fluids (water, juice, etc.) - give her mephenamic acid to relieve the pain - apply warm pads on abdomen to relieve pain
If the periods will continue being heavy for more than 4 days, should consult with her OG specialist and run further examinations.
If not heavy, wait until her periods are over and get her further tests to rule out UTI and genital infection through urine analysis and urine culture.
All the best! Dr.Albana
