What Causes Abnormal Sense Of Smell?

Several months ago I noticed that I had ost my my sense of smell, or at least it was very much diminished. About 3 weeks ago, I began smelling what smelled like sweet coffee, yet no one else could smell it. Now it has changed to more an ammonia smell. Any suggestions as to what it could be?

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of abnormal sense of smell which is due to phantosmia a condition known as disturbance in olfactory sensations. It could be due to infection of sinus also known as sinusitis and poor hygiene. I would suggest you to do nasal saline rinses and maintain hygiene. Take diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. drink plenty of water along with that take green tea 2-3 times a day and consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis. Doctor will take history or may order CT scan , blood test and nasal endoscopy.
