What Causes Absence Of Vaginal Mucus?

I was told that when female ovaries are ready to conceive a child or fertilization during sex, a white gluey like mucus is produced in the female's Virgina. Is that true? Very recently, signs of virginal mucus in my girl friend has stopped. What could be the reason for that to happen?
