What Causes Achy And Cramping Pain In Buttocks And Upper Thighs?

I recently am experiencing achy, cramping pain in my butt & upper thighs that moved to my calves. The pain is constant & relief is not received with position change. I have severe scoliosis that has a curve 45degrees as well as rotation. This has been causing me a great deal of pain for about 10yrs. & I was Dx when I was 50. The pain in my butt & thighs is new & since my scoliosis has caused a different type of pain only on my left side I don t think they are related. What is your opinion?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In some cases of scoliosis, particularly those affecting adults, the bones in the spine compress nearby nerves or spinal stenosis, a narrowing of spinal canal is often associated with adult scoliosis which can cause compression of nerves in the spine unilaterally or bilaterally.

According to the position of nerve compression, it may result in shooting pain, tingling, heaviness, weakness and numbness in the the buttock, thighs and legs unilaterally or bilaterally - a cluster of clinical features known as sciatica. You should undergo some investigations like CBC with ESR, CRP, CT scan or MRI of spine etc., to detect the exact cause for your present sufferings and then treat them accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

It could be due to nerve impingement. We should get some scans of the affected area.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
