What Causes Acid Reflux After Drinking Red Wine?

Hi, I experience acid reflux, especially after I drink red wine, I have discontinued drinking wine but still get acid reflux at night and now after I eat. I have been treating this with 1-2 tbs of apple cider vineager and that seems to clear it up...now sometimes during the day I feel a very slight burning in my esophageus as if I had eaten a chili pepper and it was burning my throat, it is very slight now but am starting to notice it more. Could this be an ulcer or just acid reflux?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Alcoholic beverages can increase gastric acid secretion. Moreover, alcohol in itself is acidic.

Hence, one can experience gastritis and its symptoms like epigastric burning, nausea, acid reflux in the esophagus, and similar symptoms.

The best treatment is to avoid alcohol and spicy food. This present episode will resolve soon if you stick to a diet devoid of spices.

If it persists for over 2 to 3 weeks, it would be advisable to get an upper GI Endoscopy done by a gastroenterologist, to see for any peptic ulcer, and manage it if present.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajit Kumar Varma
