What Causes Acne Pits?

Hello doctor, im 16 and have like one small acne pit in a place I havent had acne for a while, im curious.when acne pits actually occur? Is it immediately after a pimple or does it take a long time to form? Also, do acne pits only occur where a pimple has been popped?

Hello. Thank you for writing to us

Acne pits are a result of scaring due to inflammatory acne.
They may not be visible immediately after an inflammatory acne has resolved but rather may develop over a period of time as the deeper inflammatory acne process starts to organize/ contract and hence pulls the skin within.
Popping an acne definitely increases the chances of scaring because it may push the inflammatory process deeper Or aggravate, however, inflammatory acne can lead to scaring even without popping.
The goal is to treat inflammatory acne aggressively and appropriately so as to reduce the chances of scaring.

Regards
