Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Acute Pain In Jaw Along With Difficulty To Open The Mouth?
I don't know what happened but quite suddenly, about a week ago, I got a terrible pain in my right jaw, very localised to one spot near my ear, and I have an acute pain there if I chew or open my mouth. It hurts quite sharply. Then, it becomes a dull ache for a while.
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain it seems that you have pain in the jaw joint also known as Temporomandibular joint and the pain in a spot near the ear along with severe pain on chewing and opening the mouth seems to be due to it and the condition can be Temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome, also known as TMJ OR TMD.. I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like full mouth x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done according to the cause.. As of now you can take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen and also take muscle relaxant like Chlorzoxsone.. Take a soft diet and drink plenty of water.. Avoid hard foods and excess mouth opening.. Massage the mucles of the side of face with finger tips in round gentle movement.. Do warm compresses..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
