What Causes Acute Pain In The Left Occipital Area?

About 2 weeks ago I developed acute pain in in my left occipital area. It was very focal, like just above the posterior area of my ear. It comes and go but lately has been more constant. Ice packs seem to help. I can t take aleve as I m going to have a knee implant in three days. acetominophen helps a little but really upsets my stomach. I take a gamapentin at bedtime every since I had a bout of shigles a few years ago . It helps with my wanting to scratch my head ; also on left side.

General & Family Physician 's  Response

Hello,

As per your history, it may be due to occipital neuralgia.

For pain you can take tablet acetaminophen. For further assessment you can do MRI neck region with whole spine screening.

Please let me know do you have numbness and tingling sensation in upper limbs.

You may require tablet Pregabalin after consultation. Do regular physical therapy.

Apply diclofenac gel with heating pads locally.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale, General & Family Physician
