Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Agitation And Aggressive Behaviour While On Quetiapine, Levetiracetam And Apixaban?
My partner has later stage Alzheimer s and Vascular dementia. He is unsteady on his feet due to his left side being affected by a stroke. He has had frequent bleeds to the brain lately due to falls. The hospital consultants have taken him off most of his cocktail of drugs , including Quetiapine ,Apixaban Levetiracetam and statins . His stability and awareness has improved dramatically but his agitation and aggressiveness is now a problem .His care home are finding him very disruptive in the evenings and want him prescribed Lorazepam. I am very concerned that will increase his confusion and mobility problems. The hospital said that he must have no more falls.
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. In my opinion, his current symptoms are due to stoppage of quetiapine. Quetiapine is anti psychotic drug. If we stop it suddenly, psychosis can be precipitated. So better to consult psychiatrist for his symptoms. He will need anti psychotic drug like quetipine. Don't give lorazepam. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your husband. Thanks.
