What Causes Altered Sense Of Smell And Taste After A Tooth Extraction?

I had a tooth pulled a week ago. It is healing fine but since it was pulled I have a weird smell and taste. I am worried that infection could have gotten in my eye socket. I had decompression surgery after a thyroid problem. I guess what I am asking is....can infection get in to the socket since I had the surgery. It was over 10 years ago that I had the surgery

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain the altered sense of smell and taste after tooth extraction can be due to infection in the sinus if the tooth that is extracted is an upper jaw tooth and there is perforation in the floor of sinus leading to infection in the sinus..

It can also be due to the side effect of medicines like antibiotics or painkillers that you are taking post extraction.

You need to get evaluated ny an oral physician or an ENT expert so that the exact cause can be ruled out and treated accordingly..
In case of sinus infection antibiotics, anti inflamatory painkiller and saline nasal irrigations will relieve..

In case if it is due to side effect of medicine it will resolve once the medicine intake is stopped..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
