What Causes Altered Taste And Low Appetite While On Antibiotics?

thanks!... 4 weeks ago I had a "cysto twerp" procedure on my prostate gland... since then I developed a urinary track infection and was prescribed sulfamethoxazole 2X daily for 7 days... I lost most of my appetite, my mouth and tongue hurt and everything tastes lousy....mouth is very dry ("cotton mouth")... are these common side effects?

Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your complain loss of taste, soreness of mouth and tongue known as Stomatitis along with cotton mouth are all side effects of antibiotics and cottony mouth can be due to fungal/yeast infection known as Oral Thrush..

Consult your physician and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical evaluation and can change the antibiotic to other antibiotics..

You can be advised medications for relieving the symptoms like gargling with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine to relieve pain..
You can also be advised to suck ice pops..
If thrush is diagnosed antifungal medications like Nystatin mouthwash, Clotrimazole lozenges and oral antifungal medications like Fluconazole can help..
Take plenty of probiotics like Yoghurt and Garlic..
