What Causes Amenorrhea?

Hi Dr. I am turning 22 years old next month, I have never had sex, I am overweight and had never had any problems; but now I am worry because I have missed my period now 4 months...I was told it could be hormone inbalance and/or that is due to my overweight. I am 5 10 ht and wt. 245 lbs. my bone is large structure. On my last physical exam all came out ok. my sugar, cholesterol, etc. Only a few points more of the testerone for which gyn told me it had to do with my overweight. Again, nothing has changed I eat the same, I sleep the same, but my period stopped. What can do? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic

Amenorrhea and more than ideal weight, requires evaluation for Poly cystic ovarian syndrome and hypothyroidism. Physical examination by a gynecologist and blood investigations (LH,FSH levels, thyroid function test) are warranted at this point. Your doctor may also suggest USG scan to evaluate ovaries depending on initial evaluation.

Please be advised to follow up with your gynecologist for further evaluation.
Also, follow healthy diet and exercise regularly. Maintaining healthy weight is very important in management of amenorrhea involving PCOS.

Hope this answers your questions
