Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes An Altered Sense Of Smell And Nose Congestion?
The major symptom is that I perceive an odd, almost bitter smell which has no source (and no one else perceives it) and presents relatively frequently but not constantly. Some congestion but not preventing breathing through my nose. Some post nasal drip which has persisted for more than a month but not so bad that I get a sore throat. One other note is that I have had a deviated septum for 30 years which generally makes me feel some nasal congestion although not terrible. Not sure if that last part is relevant since this is relatively new issue with the odd smell
The symptoms of an odd taste in the nose along with congestion and post nasal drip seems and a history of the deviated nasal septum is pointing towards sinus infection or sinusitis. I would suggest you consult an emergency room and get examined and a sinus x-ray can help in confirmation of the cause.
You can advise a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, decongestants like Pseudoephedrine, do saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room. You can also advise decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline. Also, you need to get a septoplasty procedure done to correct or straighten the nasal septum.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Honey Arora
