What Causes An Altered Sense Of Smell And Taste?

I have a very poor sense of smell and all food tastes like it is cooked with garlic salt. It does not matter what I eat (fruit, bread, bacon, popcorn) it all tastes the same. This problem started in late December after having a upper respiratory infection. In the last week I smell the same scent as my taste. What could be causing this problem? Do I need to see an ENT to determine the problem?
