What Causes An Altered Sense Of Smell, Nausea And Headache?

For the last 3 months or so, I have been having weird smells. No, they are not all the same, some times it is a musty rotten smell, smoke, electrical burning, many others. They only last for 15-30 seconds. The last couple of days, headaches follow some severe some not to bad. Some of the smells make me sick to my stomach as well. Although, I have not vomited. My VA Dr has me using a sinus rinse, doesn t seem to help. I have read about phantom something, any other suggestions on what might be happening?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of altered sense of smell, nausea and headache. The symptoms you mention in query occurring due to nerve disturbance. It seems that there is degeneration of nerve endings. The nerve supplying to middle ear that is vestibulocochlear nerve is getting affected with neuropathy and leads to your symptoms. Sinusitis can also cause such symptoms . Take steam several times a day . Need not to worry. I would suggest you to consult doctor for proper examination and to rule out other causes . Doctor may prescribe medicine to strengthen the nervous system like neurobion forte along with other medicine. You should try to keep ear dry and start doing yoga and meditation. Avoid touching or pricking it with sharp object.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
