Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello Dr. : For approximtely two to three months, I ve been smelling something which is a strange combination of metallic smoke, ammonia, and vinegar. Initially I thought it was cigarettes, but i s much more acrid than that. Last December and January I did have a deep cough which I took Mucinex for, and consequently it went away. In the spring, I experienced a very brief bout of itching in the lungs and subsequent coughing.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of altered sense of smell which could be due to oral infection, sinusitis i.e inflammation of sinuses, nerve dysfunction i.e glossopharyngeal nerve and could be due to side effects of certain medications.
Need not to worry. I would suggest you to maintain proper oral hygiene. Take diet rich in zinc supplements as that will recover taste. You should take proper antibiotic an and anti-inflammatory medication course to suppress sinus infection. You should visit neurologist once as well and take medications which lower down autoimmune or nervous system disorder if it is due to nerve dysfunction. Make use of oral corticosteroids as well because if it's due to any allergy it will resume back taste.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
