What Causes An Indentation On The Back?

Hi, I have a dent on the left side of my back. It feels like there isn't a muscle in that area. And the other side of my back is completely normal. I keep having pains, off and on that really painful for a few seconds then goes away. What is your opinion and what do you suggest that I do?
