What Causes An Indentation On The Bridge Of The Nose?

Hi doctor, A few years ago, I got into a very bad sports injury where I got hit in the nose by a cricket bat with full force. My nose was bleeding from the bridge and it was the most painful thing that has ever happened to me. I was very young then (I also was in a different country. Specifically a third world country). Obviously I couldn t get the right treatment and the doctors there told me I had to have a surgery to fix my nose if it wasn t straight. My parents and I, came back to England and we were going to go to a doctor here but somehow they forgot over the time. When I touch the bridge of my nose, I can feel it is broken (there is like a small hole that I can feel in the bone) and I also have a crook/dent in my nose. Other problems are that sometimes my nose feels weird and kind of heavy (I don t know how to describe it, as it is a very unusual feeling) and I can only breath through one nostril at a time. I have been to the GP, however the doctor didn t understand my problem and told me it was just a cold?? I was furious because he didn t understand my problem and didn t give me a chance to speak hence why I couldn t tell him that my nose is broken and I can t breath properly. By the way I am 17 years old. I hope you can help me answering on what step to take next. Thank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have a history of nose injury(indentation) of the bridge of the nose during sports. Treatment was neglected & now your symptoms are chronic.

I suggest you to see an ENT surgeon. Get examined physically, get X-ray PNS, NCCT(if required) done. It will help to detect any deviation of the nasal septum or chronic sinusitis.

Sinusitis can be treated by medicines(oral antihistamines, decongestants, antibiotic, etc). Any deviation in the nasal septum may need surgery.

If septal nose perforation is suspected, your treating doctor may suggest you go through rhinoscopy or nasal endoscopy to confirm the size & location of the perforation.

You may or may not have to go through CT or MRI depending upon the size, location & severity of the perforation detected.

It may require a surgical repair or prosthesis(whatever your treating doctor may prefer).

It can be treated by saline irrigation & regular humidification. Avoid nasal decongestants & sprays. Stay away from addictions if any. Get treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
