What Causes An Inflamed Lump Beside The Knee Cap?

My cousin has a quarter sized lump next to the knee cap on the outside of the right leg. It came on suddenly and burns underneath the skin (in the lump) if she touches it or turns her leg inward. She has had this for a week. Have any ideas what this could be? Thank you!
