What Causes An Intense Burning Sensation In The Arm?

A week ago I awoke in the middle of the night to an intense burning sensation on my arm. Like someone was branding me. I didn t look at it because it subsided enough for me to fall back asleep. When I woke up in the morning, I had what looked like a a dark red burn mark about the size of a thumbprint which was very sensitive just like a severe sunburn. It never blistered, it stays under the skin. About day 5 it started to itch and I scratched it without thinking and then skin started to peel back like from a sunburn. Any idea what caused this?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Intense burning of sudden onset during night might be related to skin and subcutaneous inflammation following some sort of bug bite most likely. Local application of steroid or hydrocortisone cream, anti histamine as cetrizine or diphenhyramine prescription with your doc would serve best for healing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
