What Causes An Itchy Sore On The Nipple Despite A Normal Mammogram?

I and 49 yo and had my mammogram in January 2017. It had to be repeated because of the high density of my breasts. Still, the doctor did an ultrasound and deemed the test was normal. He however recommended annual screens for me. About four weeks ago I suddenly noticed small, red and inflamed pustule by my nipple (about 3 mm diameter). I squeezed it, and it dried up. The small scab remains and I slightly itchy. Otherwise, I do not see anything other that is concerning on my breasts. Should I worry?

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your health concern with us. The pustule you have experienced is more likely to be a superficial skin infection and not related to the breast tissue. However, it is good to be cautious and please report the matter to your consultant and get it reviewed if necessary. Do get regular screening as suggested by your doctor. Watch for any nipple discharge, puckering of the skin over the nipples and deviation of the nipples from normal. The scab may be smoothed by using calamine or olive oil application. Hope this helps.
