What Causes An Outbreak Of Hives All Over The Body?

My son had a hernia repaired with a mesh the 27 of Dec., 2016. He has had hives off and on all over his body ever since. He has been tested for food allergies and has avoided those foods. He has eliminated detergents, soaps, etc. he has had two courses of steroids, and uses antihistamines which make it almost impossible to work. Could he possibly be allergic to the mesh?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There are chances of the body`s immune system producing antibodies against the prolene or other synthetic mesh material.

But in this case, there will be the local destruction of the mesh (if not absorbable ), should see for the local part ultrasound examination.

The second possibility of antibiotic or anti-inflammatory drug sensitivity can be considered, which would be a normal part of the postoperative recovery phase.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
