My son (19 years-old) was receiving cefazolin, 2 gm/three times/day through a PICC line, due to a staph infection in an incision from back . After 10 days of a six-week regimen, he began developing a various serious allergic reaction. The infectious disease nurse changed his antibiotic today, but the skin welts are continuing to spread and becoming much worse. I contacted the hospital where he had the spine surgery, the second surgery for the staph infection, and where the PICC line was installed, but the doctor has not called me back after about 4 and a half hours. After all he has been through, I hate to see him in such extreme discomfort. Is there anything besides topical and oral diphenhydramine that can be administered that might help?
