What Causes Antihistone Antibodies Build Up In The Body?
I have a positive anti-histone at 3.8 but do not take any drugs. I have not felt well for several months and back in January when I was really sick I had a positive ANA with a speckled result but today all my blood work was normal except the Histone. What could this be?
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Anti-histone antibodies are auto antibodies that are subset of anti-nuclear antibody family. They specifically target histone protein subunits or histone complexes. A value greater than 1.5 units relative to control serum is considered to be positive. It is usually positive in drug induced lupus erythematosus. It may be positive in other conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, Felty's syndrome, Systemic sclerosis and primary biliary cirrhosis. Hence, the test results need to be correlated clinically and might require additional investigation work-up.
Hope the information provided helps. All the best.

Dr. Ashakiran. S
