What Causes Anxiety And Sleeplessness After Treating A Brain Stroke?
My mom is 90 in January, she had a rig brain stroke sept 1 of this year. She is home with hospice care. She has much trouble relaxing & is very anxious & scared all the time, scared to be alone. She needs something to relax and sleep. I have the usual comfort care kit but nothing seems to work well enough. Any suggestions?Thank you so much, Catherine ; devoted daughter & caregiver
Depression and anxiety are common phenomena after a stroke. Age and previous cognitive decline may contribute as well, accelerated by the stroke.
I would suggest discussing with the doctor the possibility of initiating antianxiety medication.
After a stroke and at that age SSRI antidepressants like citalopram would be the preferred choice due to low risk of side effects although should know that their effect may need a few weeks to take place.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
