What Causes Anxiety And Weakness Post Blood Transfusions?

My dad is 93. .. He is anemic . I took him to the doctors yesterday . My dad seemed fine. The doctor gives him a procrit shot every month or 2.My dad is recovering from a UTI (2weeksago). He is much stronger and is able to walk around with his walker. He was fine yesterday . He was walking ok. He did have some edema. Doctor said he needed a blood transfusion today. It was his first one ever.the gave him one unit because his blood pressure went up and they felt one bag was all he could handle. The also gave him 20mg of lasix drip This morning he was fine. I dressed him gave him breakfast and he walked to the car, After the transfusion he was anxious and weak and could barely walk . Is this normal for can elderly person ? Patrice

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Anxiety is common during blood transfusion. Weakness and inability to walk are not common.

Yet he must be further examined to check for other symptoms like:
1) Fever
2) Cough
3) Breathlessness
4) Skin rash
5) Chills

All the above symptoms indicate an allergic reaction to blood transfusion. They can occur during or even 2 hours after blood transfusion. If your father has recovered now and is able to walk, it's ok. If he is still not able to walk, you need to take him to a physician for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
